Abstract

Agrobacterium-mediated gene transformation has been commonly used to transfer desirable foreign gene from any source to rice genome. However, indica rice was considered recalcitrant to Agrobacterium- mediated gene transformation. Through optimization of relevant transformation techniques, several indica rice varieties were successfully transformed. This mini-review compiles the success stories and future research focus on Agrobacterium-mediated gene transformation technique in indica rice. Reasons that hinder the efficiency of Agrobacterium-mediated gene transformation, and factors that improve its efficiency are reviewed.
