Abstract

Limestone injection with multi-stage burners (LIMB) is EPA's programme for RD and D of emissions control technology for coal-fired boilers that can reduce both SO/sub x/ and NO/sub x/. The LIMB concept uses low-NO/sub x/ burners plus sorbent injection to control these pollutants simultaneously and represents a lower-cost alternative to currently available SO/sub x/ control approaches such as flue gas desulphurisation, coal cleaning and coal switching. The operation of the LIMB system is described, with details of its performance. Costs are given for different applications and comparisons are made with FGD systems.
