Planning analysis on metropolitan marginal area of Beijing along with its expansion

Abstract

In the new version of Beijing master urban planning (2005-2020), Tongzhou District, one of the metropolitan marginal area in Beijing, was oriented as the integrated service center for the development of new towns and cities in the future. The function of Tongzhou new town is the key area for functional expansion of the centeral Beijing. In the initial and middle phases, it provides service for the Shunyi new town in the north and the Yizhuang new town in the south. Tongzhou New Town and Village System Planning are formulated. This paper, from the perspective of Tongzhou Village System Planning (2006-2020), makes some comments on the planning methods and provides related suggestions. Also, it reflects on the problems probably caused by the rapid expansion of Beijing metropolitan fringe. It expects to draw on the advantages and avoid disadvantages and to minimize the social problems of urban fringe to achieve the sustainable development of Beijing metropolitan region.
