Abstract

Effects of MTBE on activities of superoxide dismutase in gills, livers, and muscles of Carassius auratus exposed to different concentrations of MTBE were studied. The results show that effects of MTBE on activities of SOD in gills, livers and muscles of Carassius auratus varied with the concentration of MTBE and exposure time;activities of SOD in muscles and livers at 48 h were higher than those at 96 h and 144 h after the exposure. But for the activities of SOD in gills, the maximum was at 96 h.Under the same exposing conditions, activities of SOD in gills were lower than those in livers(P0.05),but closer to those in muscles. At the same exposure time, lower concentration of MTBE induced the activities of SOD,but higher concentration of MTBE inhibited them.Change of SOD activities in Carassius auratus can indirectly affect the degree of pollution by MTBE in water body, which can be used as one bio-marker in testing water pollution with MTBE.
