Abstract
BS>In order to ascertain that the radioactivity due to fallout from weapons tests is below the MPC values, the concentrations of 8 radioisotopes, Zr/ sup 95/, Nb/sup 95/, Ru/sup 103/, Ba/sup 140/, L a/sup 140/, Ce/sup 141/, Ce/sup 144/, and Cs/sup 137/, in air were determined by means of a scintillation spectrometer from their gamma -spectrum. The energy distribution was detected with the NaI phosphor of the scanning spectrometer. The air was passed through a filter at a rate of 20 ft/sup 3//min after which the paper was ignited and the ashes were analyzed. The Cs/sup 137/ concentration was found to vary as a function of the climate, latitude, longitude, and altitude. The amount of Cs/sup 137/ found in 8000 ft/sup 3/ of air was 82.8 mu mc, equivalent to 1.38 x 10/sup - 2/ mu mc/ft/sup 3/. (TTT)
