THE VARIATION OF THE FISSION PRODUCT CONTENT OF CYSTOSEIRA IN THE BLACK SEA

Abstract

Samples of brown seaweed (Cystoseim barbata) were counted after ashing on end-window beta counters having window thicknesses of 1.5 and 5 mg/cm/sup 2/. The gamma -energies of the activities were also determined on a 99-channel gamma -scintillation counter equipped with a NaI(Tl) crystal 70 x 45 mm. Ssmples were taken from 1957 to May of 1960, and the activities were compared with a museum sample taken in 1939. The level of radioactivity in the sample increased from 1957 to a maximum in the summer and autum of 1959, and dropped sharply in 1960. An analysis of the gamma spectra showed that most of the radioactivity in the seaweed was due to the Ce/sup 144/-- Pr/sup 144/ peak at 130 kev energy. Smaller peaks due to Zr/sup 95/--Nb/sup 95/, Ru/sup 103/, Ru/sup 106/--Rh/sup 106/ and K/sup O/ are also observed. The activities in the ash in units of 10/sup - 10/ curies/g for seaweed. collected in September of 1959 were 3.00 for Ce/sup 144/ - Pr/sup 144/ 0.70 for Zr/sup 95/--Nb/sup 95/ 1.30 for Ru/sup 106/ and 0.70 for Ru/sup 106/--Rh/sup 106/. The figare for Ce/sup 144/-- Pr/sup 144/ had dropped to 0.17 for seaweed collected in November of 1960.
