Abstract

Research and development in highway safety and traffic operations are essential to deal effectively with existing problems and seek solutions, alternatives, or a better understanding of developing future problems. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has had an active program in this area since the 1950s. This article is an overall brief summary of the existing program and the processes associated with it.
