Abstract

A field experiment was conducted at Research farm, Department of Agronomy, PAU, Ludhiana during Rabi season 2008–09 with the objectives of evaluating the effect of levels and time of nitrogen application on yield, chlorophyll content and N-uptake of two barley varieties. The results revealed that variety DWR UB52 recorded significantly higher grain yield (41.9 q/ha) than variety VJM 201 (39.6 q/ha). The uptake of nitrogen in grain was significantly more in variety DWR UB52 than VJM 201. The grain yield increased significantly with nitrogen application of 90 kg/ha which yielded highest grain yield (50.2 q/ha) while lower yield of 30.3 q/ha was recorded with control where no nitrogen was applied. Significantly higher periodic chlorophyll content in leaf (2.14 mg/g at 75 DAS was recorded with the application of highest dose of nitrogen i.e 90 kg/ha. The uptake of nitrogen through grain and straw were appreciably increased with every increase in the rate of nitrogen while the different time of nitrogen application did not differ from each other either in respect of N-content in grain or in respect of removal of nitrogen through grain and straw.
