Abstract

The purpose of the program was to determine the effect of proper commercial vehicle inspection and maintenance procedures on safety and to document the need for improved or modified inspection and maintenance requirements as stated in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations. Based on the data analysis it is concluded that there is an identifiable relationship between good inspection and maintenance practices and a reduction in defect-related accidents. It is recommended that the Bureau formalize the current practices of the better motor carrier with respect to vehicle inspection and expand the enforcement and education activities of the Bureau.
