Regulation of tuberose cut flower senescence by using certain chemicals

Abstract

In an experiment conducted to study the effect of salicylic acid and 5-sulphosalicylic acid applied alone or in combination with sucrose in a vase solution on vase life and other associated parameters in tuberose cultivars, Vaibhav and Mexican Single. Treatments used were comprised of sucrose @ 4%, salicylic acid @ 50,100 ppm and 5-sulphosalicylic acid @ 25, 50, 100, 200 ppm and control (distilled water). Out of all the treatment combinations applied, the chemical solution composed of 100 ppm salicylic acid and 4% sucrose was found best in extending the vase life followed by vase solution having 100 ppm 5-sulphosalicylic acid and 4% sucrose. The spikes were able to remain afresh for longer duration (days), maximum flower opening, increase in rachis length (cm) and maximum spike length (cm) as compared to other treatments which might be due to higher uptake of vase solution. Aesthetic look of cut spikes in terms of turgidity and freshness was also better in this treatment.
