Electricity and the energy gap

An optimistic view, based on thermodynamic laws, urges a psychological shift from dependence on fossil fuels to a technological pursuit of alternative energy sources. The Edison Electric Institute (EEI) supports the development and demonstration of solar energy, and has funded over $45 million through 1981 for this purpose. Their program is matched by over 200 similar programs, several of which are listed and described. Utilities are also studying geothermal energy, wind power, and fusion. Participation in the Federal Energy Administration's Utilities Conservation Action (UCA71042) involves promoting a commitment to conservation within the industry, utility regulatory commissions, and the public, and supporting training programs in a range of subjects from maintenance to management. The Conservation and Energy Management Division of EEI is involved in promoting efficient distribution and end use of electric power in order to make available electricity go further. The group's aims are listed and described. Some investor-owned utilities provide the AXCESS Energy Analysis Computer Program, which allows companies to compare the energy requirements of alternative systems for their buildings. (DCK)
