Abstract
It is predicted that in the future Borlinskii coal will replace up to 20% of all solid fuel fired in thermal power plants in Kazakhstan. Tests, analyses, and trial firings of this coal were conducted to determine its capability as a boiler fuel. It was found that Borlinskii coal may be burned in pure form in boiler units either designed originally or subsequently modified to burn a fuel of approximately the same specific properties. Further studies should be conducted on the properties of this coal and its ash content under actual operating conditions for a more extended period of time before deciding on the feasibility of substituting it for higher grade coals.
