Abstract
In (1.0 +- *0.1)% of the interactions of ..pi../sup -/ mesons (p..pi../sup -/= 40 GeV/c) with carbon nuclei, pions are observed at energies above those allowed kinematically for pion-nucleon interactions. In 80% of the cases, these pions are emitted into the rear hemisphere of the laboratory system, and in 90% of the cases they are positively charged. In events with cumulative pions, the multiplicity of all charged secondaries increases, and the probability for complete disintegration of the carbon nucleus increases by a factor approx. =5. The inclusive pion spectrum is exponential, with a slope parameter lower than that for cumulative protons by a factor of 5--7.
