Abstract
Underground gas storage is taking excess gas during the warmer months and injecting it into a reservoir near a major market area where it will remain until needed to supplement gas supply during cold weather. As the pressures and volumes decline in the gas fields and demand increases, it becomes more difficult to meet the peak demands on cold days. After all the various interests are acquired and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commmission has approved the project, a development program can be started. It takes several years to complete. The plugged wells and existing wells are re-entered and re-conditioned; new injection-withdrawal wells and saltwater disposal wells are drilled; and a storage gathering system, a saltwater gathering system and compressors are installed. An established volume of gas is injected each year and a smaller volume is withdrawn until the reservoir is at maximum capacity.
