Abstract

Underground storage of natural gas is the most effective way to meet market requirements for gas during the winter months. There were some significant mileposts in 1970. For example, total storage capacity exceeded the 5 trillion mark for the first time, representing more than new gas discoveries for the past few years. Storage compressor station horsepower passes the one million mark, almost 11% of the total for the entire pipeline industry. The use of water sands (aquifers) for gas storage has proven very effective. Aquifers account for more than 18% of total storage capacity and nearly 16% of maximum-day output. There are 43 aquifer reservoirs in 9 states, and several pools under construction. Tabular data show the following: (1) comparative data for underground gas storage 1968-1970; and (2) statistics on storage facilities as of 12/31/70.
