Deutscher Bundestag (German Federal Parliament), Positions Of The German Parties Towards The UN

The Federal Republic of Germanys accession to the United Nations in 1973 did little to increase the attention paid to the world organization in the domestic political arena. All the parties represented in the Bundestag present a UN-friendly image at the declarative level. The aims set out by the governing parties in their electoral programmes can be assessed in the light of the actions actually taken whilst in office. This also applies to the newly elected Red-Green coalition, which generated great expectations of constructive UN engagement through its coalition agreement and other declarations of intent. It remains to be seen whether the constraints of budgetary consolidation will allow these self-proclaimed objectives to be achieved.
