Abstract
Young engineers need training in the visual appreciation of structures. It would be helpful for them to have an approximate formula to which they can add with increasing experience. With this in mind, the author explains the language or vocabulary for describing visual aspects, then uses this language in describing the visual aspects of some existing bridges. The author also briefly addresses the problem of the lengthening of existing bridges, where an old bridge has to be married to a new bridge. In conclusion, examples of some aesthetically pleasing short- and medium-span bridges are discussed.
