Abstract
In January 1992 a toll attendant, working night shift at a remote plaza on the Dallas North Tollway, was shot, and $318 was taken from the toll booth by the robber. Management had begun the design process for a new toll collection and communication system. Suddenly safety and security became a top priority in that design. This paper briefly describes the Texas Turnpike Authority custom designed deposit vault and vending unit. The North Texas Tollway Authority is pleased to report that no armed robberies have occurred since the 1992 incident and the toll attendant has recovered.
