Abstract

This article discusses the technology and concerns current in hybrid truck vehicle manufacture and use, from the viewpoint of truck manufacturer Volvo. Certification procedures on pollutant emission are the same as those for fully diesel engines, disregarding the lower emissions level of hybrids. In urban operations the engine shuts down the use of diesel and often produces zero emissions. Although fuel efficiency of diesel engines continues to improve, these improvements could be enhanced by the addition of hybrid powertrains. Urban refuse collection vehicles are seen as the most worthwhile application for the technology, although overnight charging may be necessary. Battery specifications are crucial to acceptance of hybrids, as currently the lighter batteries have a higher cost. Other operational hybrid attractions include regenerative braking.
