Abstract

This paper considers those qualitative factors such as attitudes and perceptions that affect a driver's decision to take a given route while driving. The stated preference survey which was carried out in this paper was done so for those people in KwangJu who commute to and from work everyday. This study particularly considers the matter of travel time which a driver must contemplate before a drive begins a trip. According to the data obtained from the survey, the characteristics of the given statistics were analyzed and then the LISREL model was used to develop the model that best explains the driver's choice of route, that was revealed through the quantitative and qualitative factors. As the results of the route choice model, the t-value, the variable indicating the usual route taken, shows a high positive value, and the variable for the times a given route was taken per week, shows a negative value. Therefore, when comparing the factors, it was found that the variable indicating the amount of times a driver uses his/her usual route is the more important in the route choice behavior than other. The t-value indicating traffic information in LIBREL is also high. It is therefore apparent that traffic information is an important factor that affects the travel behavior of drivers.
