UPS AND DOWNS OF EXCHANGE RATE MECHANISMS

This article reviews truck operating costs in the UK in 2003. Truck operating costs are correlated with service sector inflation. The influence of currency exchange rates on truck operating costs is considered. Drivers earnings and pay rises, fuel and oil costs, capital costs, depreciation costs, finance, and the costs of maintenance, tyres, vehicle exercise duty, insurance, and overheads are considered. The economic outlook and the implications for truck operating costs are discussed. Tables are presented of bulk diesel price and crude oil price in the UK in 2003 and the standing and running costs of rigids 7.5-32 tonnes GVW, semi trailers, and tractive units 28-44 tonnes GCW.
