Abstract

Truck operating costs in the UK increased moderately in 2002. Fuel costs were down and interest rates were low. Trucks and trailers remained cheap to buy, but the cost of drivers and maintenance technicians increased. Details are given of the economic situation in 2002, costs of fuel, oil, tyres, truck vehicle excise duty, capital costs, depreciation, driver pay settlements, maintenance costs, finance, insurance, overheads and the economic outlook. Tables are presented giving the costs associated with running 7.5-32 tonnes gvw rigids, semi-trailers, and 28-44 tonnes gcw tractive units.
