Abstract
This brief article outlines a 4-year project of the Institute of Transportation Engineers and the United States Federal Highway Administration to provide support to traffic engineers in their efforts to alleviate traffic congestion and in the deployment, operation, and maintenance of intelligent transportation systems. The joint project was initiated in October 1995 and includes the following elements: professional development and certification; information resources and tools; standards for traffic control devices and systems; status reports and effectiveness guidelines of urban traffic engineering agencies; and, best practice models for operation and maintenance of traffic control systems.
