Abstract

This paper covers the history of traffic controls and their use in construction and maintenance work areas. It covers some of the knowledge gained through experimentation in actual practice, and research projects. The paper emphasizes the need for standardization in application of traffic control devices and the development of traffic control plans. A review of latest federal highway program requirements for traffic safety in highway and street work zones is presented.
