Abstract
This article looks at bus rapid transit (BRT) as a more affordable alternative to light rail in urban settings. Some 17 U.S. cities are currently using or are planning to use some form of BRT in their transportation schemes. BRT encompasses everything from Seattle's bus tunnel with its underground stations, to Pittsburgh's busways, which feature dedicated bus lanes and train-like stations. BRT also includes rapid express buses, which run on regular surface streets, but utilize special signals prioritization gear allowing the buses to zip through traffic lights. Various advantages offered by BRT, such as reduced operational costs and better service, are discussed.
