Abstract
This paper describes how bus rapid transit (BRT) is a broadly defined mode that also encompasses elements of express, or highway-based, commuter bus options. This paper examines the characteristics of successful express-type, regional BRT systems, where they fit with both their rail counterparts as well as other types of BRT service, and how national and international trends in urban development patterns make this segment of BRT such a powerful weapon in the arsenals of planning staff.
