Abstract

Expo 2000 in Hannover, Germany is expected to attract 40 million visitors, posing a burden on the local transport network. The measures taken to optimise the use of network capacity are described. These include the diverting away of freight trains from Hannover to release additional paths, use of freight tracks for passenger trains, use of coupled trams of up to 100 m length on the light rail network, development of an S-Bahn network, renovation of Hannover's main station, extension of the light rail system, provision of additional rolling stock capacity, upgrading of the light rail network and modernisation of some stations.
