Abstract

 The geopotential value (W0) can define the Gauss-Listing geoid (i.e., mean sea level (MSL) in its ideal case), the best fitting ellipsoid to the geoid and unify vertical datums in use by mapping agencies throughout the world within geopotential space. At the current accuracies of space geodetic techniques, consideration should be given to the secular change of W0 (dW0 /dt). This reflects changes in the size and the shape of the Earth as a direct response to sea level change and mass redistribution etc.
