Abstract

This article describes the new Desiro trains to be put into service in Malaysia's express rail link (ERL) and commuter rail service (CRS), currently under development. The express rail link connects the airport at Kuala Lumpur with the city centre. The commuter trains will use the same route but make more frequent stops. Both train types are being built to the same modular design, but the ERL trains feature more attractive and comfortable interior furnishings. The article details the unit specifications for the traction equipment, including the provision of automatic train protection. Construction of the track and stations is making good progress and installation of infrastructure is being completed.
