Towards Realization of a Next Generation Commuter Train System

Abstract

This article is part of a special issue of JR EAST Technical Review that focuses on technical innovations for commuter trains. The author describes the progress of research and development towards the formation of the new railway system in Japan to be known as e@train, and which includes development of the Advanced Commuter (AC) train. The author profiles the Series E993 prototype train that was manufactured as a development model for verification purposes; testing for this train began in February 2002. The author focuses on five aspects: reduction of total cost through system change; enhancement of the stability of transportation; enhancement of passenger services; barrier free facilities; and ecological design. The author concludes that AC Trains Vision for mass production incorporating the technology evaluated for practical use with the Series E993 prototype train will be positioned as the next generation commuter and suburban train in the Tokyo metropolitan area and is in the preparatory stage towards realization.
