Abstract

This chapter presents the state of the art concerning computer-aided operation systems for public transport management. It is especially based on recent developments performed in the EC DRIVE programme (mainly through the Cassiope, EuroBus, Bartoc, and Phoebus projects). These projects deal with the building of a conceptual and physical architecture for public tranport information systems (including vehicle scheduling and control systems, passenger information aids and fare systems). Other systems developed worldwide are also reviewed. Included in the chapter are details of the proposed functional specifications for Advanced Public Transport Systems which form part of the European reference data model, Transmodel. For the covering abstract see IRRD 889207.
