Abstract

This chapter discusses some factors relevant to the use of parking standards and to the location and design (including capacity) of off-street car parking facilities. In the UK, local authorities normally specify how many parking spaces should be provided for a new development before it is granted planning permission; such specifications can include the maximum number of spaces permitted or the minimum number required. Car parking standards are listed for various land uses, including private residences, shops, and offices. Parking standards vary considerably between type of land use, and may evolve appreciably with time. Off-street parking for a new development should preferably be associated directly with the buildings that it is intended to serve. A car park's location and size should be related to the surrounding streets' ability to handle entering and leaving vehicles safely and efficiently. The first step in designing the facility is to determine the vehicle to be used for design purposes. The chapter finally discusses: (1) the design of surface car parks; (2) off-street parking of commercial vehicles; (3) the types of multi-storey car park; and (4) design considerations for self-parking multi-storey car parks.
