Restoring the quality of the running surface so as to prolong rail life is conventionally regarded as the principal objective of rail head profile grinding. Removing corrugations and other surface defects has benefits that are immediately ovious, but MT. Newman has discovered numerous additional advantages such as prolonged wheel life and reduced fuel consumption. Indeed, this impact of rail grinding can be felt in most areas of rail operations.
