Abstract

This paper will discuss the largest transportation project in the New York City metropolitan area in over 50 years. The MTA/Long Island Railroad's Grand Central Connection, also known as the East Side Access project, is the first transportation project of the new millennium for the MTA and the first route expansion in over 100 years. The project is due to be completed in 2011 and will bring LIRR trains and customers directly into Grand Central Terminal which will provide a critical east mid-town link to the 166 year old system. The new connection will carry about 160,000 commuter railroad customers per day.
