Abstract

Created in 1982 as a subsidiary of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority of New York, Metro-North Railroad (MNR) took control of Conrail's commuter operations in New York and Connecticut January 1, 1983. The agency now runs a 384 route mile system with three lines east of the Hudson River that end at New York City's Grand Central Terminal. MTA MNR has the lion's share of the Manhattan-bound market and ridership is still growing. The article examines how the system plans to accommodate the growth in the ridership. The two major plans identified are: maintaining a state of good repair; and a planned acquisition of a new car fleet.
