Abstract

This paper presents the ADONIS project from 1996-98, sponsored by the European Commission. The main sub-project of ADONIS was the compilation of the catalogue Best Practice to Promote Cycling and Walking; the other sub-projects concerned behavioural factors affecting modal choice, a qualitative analysis of accidents to cyclists and pedestrians, and how to replace short car trips by cycling and walking. The catalogue gives 102 examples of projects in Denmark, The Netherlands, Belgium, and Spain to promote and encourage cycling and walking. It presents infrastructure measures such as cycle tracks and crossing facilities, and other measures, including traffic regulations, traffic signals, public information and education. Measures were selected according to whether they were attractive, made trips shorter or quicker, stimulated walking or cycling, cost-effective, or encouraged safety or security; at least seven classification criteria were used. The paper gives more details of cycle crossings and measures benefiting disabled people. The catalogue mainly contains single measures, although facilities at transport network and route levels can be very important. The measures described should always be adapted to local conditions and legislation.
