Abstract
Trichomoniasis is considered the most prevalent sexually transmitted disease. It is caused by Trichomonas vaginalis, a unicellular flagellate protozoon [1,2]. Worldwide, the World Health Organization estimates that 180 million persons are infected annually [2]. This parasite affects both sexes, although women are more susceptible. Metronidazole has been demonstrated to be highly effective against these protozoa. Its widespread use has lead to selection of resistant strains [3,4]. In addition, this drug has been showed to be carcinogenic in rats and mice
