Abstract
Mr. Zukerman points to a National Academy of Sciences study which says energy conservation could save 65 quads by the year 2000; but the doomsayers point out a 27-quad deficit will still exist, acording to projections. Effective policies could confound the doomsayers according to Mr. Zukerman by promoting available energy sources (coal and nuclear) to meet short-term needs; and to meet the requirements of the next millenium, solar and renewable energy technologies should be commericalized. Building owners and managers should make far more use of energy management systems, he says, to eliminate energy waste and save energy costs. Four steps outlined for improving the energy efficiency of a facility are based on an energy audit which evaluates the facility's systems in terms of the fuels used, where and how the fuels are used, the end uses, and the times and seasons of use.
