Abstract
To investigate the effect of L/B ratio on the manoeuvrability of widebeam ships, a series of manoeuvring tests on three tanker models of 4.0, 5.0, and 6.0 L/B was conducted. The 5.0 L/B tanker was regarded as the parent ship, and the effect of rudder form and area on the manoeuvrability of this model was also investigated. It was established as a result of tests that the course stability of these ships is extremely poor, although turning ability is better. To establish the causes of course instability, streamlines at the stern were observed in a circulating water channel. A series test of the manoeuvrability of ship models with modified sterns was also run.
