Abstract

The SWATH twin hull design provides a stable, smooth ride at high speed on open seas and is commanding increasing attention. The NAVITEK I, a SWATH ship that typifies the advantages the design offers, is described. The ship, now launched, is the first full- size commercial SWATH and was built for Steven Loui, president of Pacific Marine, Hawaii, by Thompson Metal Fab in Vancouver, Washington. In the waters around Hawaii, conditions can routinely become too rough for passenger excursion boats. Air travel is therefore usually the mode of choice. Loui plans to draw away some of this market share, seeing the opportunity of being the first to offer guaranteed comfort on island sightseeing cruises.
