Abstract
This paper describes how the wheel to rail interface is coming under increasingly close scrutiny, as transit properties work to address issues with noise, wear and/or derailments, as well as for optimizing maintenance cycles for wheels and rail. The issue has been brought sharply into focus by the problems which have arisen when introducing new technology vehicles onto older systems, and on some newer systems. This paper describes an integrated approach to handling the wheel to rail interface, particularly as applied to the integration of new vehicles into new and older transit systems. The paper discusses the importance of good management of the interface, covering safety, comfort and cost factors, and proposes a systems approach, which considers the vehicle, the track, and the operation together, with clearly defined design criteria, standards and practices. The four phases of effective management discussed are Definition, Design, Implementation and Maintenance, and the activities associated with each are covered, with guidelines and best practice recommendations included. Several case studies, from Booz Allen’s experience around the world, are included. This integrated approach to wheel to rail interface management results in increased safety and comfort, and reduced overall maintenance costs.
