Abstract

DATA INVOLVING TWO TO FIVE YEARS OF DRIVEWAY ACCIDENT HISTORY FROM SKOKIE, ILLINOIS HAVE BEEN ANALYZED. FINDINGS IN PART I OF A THREE PART SERIES INCLUDE: 11% OF CITYWIDE ACCIDENTS INVOLVED DRIVEWAYS; 83% OF ALL DRIVEWAY ACCIDENTS OCCURRED ON MAJOR TRAFFIC ROUTES; 60% OF ALL ACCIDENTS AND 75% OF THE INJURY TYPE ACCIDENTS INVOLVED LEFT TURNS; AND PROXIMITY OF AN INTERSECTION WAS AN ELEMENT OF 7% OF THE MAJOR ROUTE DRIVEWAY ACCIDENTS, BUT ONLY 3% OF THE MINOR OR LOCAL STREET DRIVEWAY ACCIDENTS. ACCIDENT RATES ON A YEAR, DRIVEWAY AND BASIS WERE ALSO TABULATED ALONG MAJOR TRAFFIC ROUTES AS A FUNCTION OF TYPE OF ABUTTING DEVELOPMENT. THE AVERAGE ACCIDENT FREQUENCY YEAR DRIVEWAY WAS 0.33, WHILE THE SAME RATE ON A PER ESTABLISHMENT BASIS WAS 0.6. OF THE 407 TOTAL PEDESTRIAN AND BICYCLE RIDER ACCIDENTS, ONLY 3% INVOLVED DRIVEWAYS. OF THESE, MOST INVOLVED MOTOR VEHICLES LEAVING THE ESTABLISHMENT. A TENDENCY WAS FOUND FOR AN INCREASED ANNUAL FREQUENCY OF DRIVEWAY ACCIDENTS AS ROUTE AVERAGE DAILY TRAFFIC (ADT) INCREASED. /AUTHOR/
