The Path to Mobility - The Role of Advice, Assessment and Communication

Personal mobility for disabled people is an important and rapidly developing sector in the United Kingdom. A number of mobility centres offering advice and assessment to disabled people on driving, vehicle choice and vehicle adaptation have developed over the past few years, and demand on their services is growing. However, far too many people are still deprived of mobility because they lack the information they need. The Department of Transport is helping to set up new mobility centres and to promote the value of assessment and advice. Communication between the disabled person, the assessment centre and the adaptation specialist is also of concern, and research is taking place to investigate and develop the relationship between the parties to ensure safe independent mobility.
