Abstract
This paper considers the opportunities that arise from combining digital highway networks, relational databases, GIS technology, specialist application software, and workstation computer systems. The design issues that can increase the scope and value of such systems are discussed, and include the following: integrating diverse data; and ensuring robustness to be able to change with time. The paper focuses on a description of a demonstrator system known as 'Network information Workbench' (NiW), and several applications of it are noted.
