Abstract
Intelligent Vehicle-Highway Systems (IVHS) encompass the application of a wide range of advanced technologies that share the common goal of improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the overall transportation system. GIS for transportation (GIS-T) shares the same goal but approaches the problem from a different perspective, that of integrating attribute data which is spatially referenced. GIS has traditionally taken a thematic approach but with the extension of the GIS data model into transportation, tools and techniques are being developed which provide a more analytical framework for transportation study. The purpose of this paper is to: (1) examine whether from a meta-level perspective the two technologies can be integrated or combined in some way, and, (2) explore some of the issues which are germane to this possibility.
