PEDESTRIAN SAFETY PROGRAMME: DAVEYTON

This is a continuation of an integrated safety programme in the town of Daveyton. Attention has been given to the education of the community regarding traffic lights, street closures and general aspects of pedestrian safety. Law enforcement measures to promote traffic safety and in particular pedestrian safety in Daveyton also received attention. Traffic lights were installed and some of the streets were closed off to prevent through traffic, as a safety measure, especially to protect child pedestrians. Due to community resistance however, the street closures have been since removed. During 1983 there was a decrease of 22.2 per cent in pedestrian casualties in Daveyton whereas there was an increase of 0.4 per cent in these casualties in South Africa for the same period. (TRRL)
