Abstract
The South Miami-Dade Busway is a 2-lane, at-grade busway and is the first of its kind to be implemented in North America. The facility, parallel to U.S. Route 1 in southern Florida in Miami-Dade County, is about 13 km (8 mi) long and began running in February 1997. This paper presents an overview of the history of the SMD Busway and provides information on ridership and other key operational aspects that can hopefully be applied elsewhere.
