Abstract

This article presents the history of the Metro in the greater Washington DC area. It discusses the planning, controversies surrounding it, the key players involved, the difficulties of implementing a rail transit system serving both the urban areas and the suburbs, the National Capital Transportation Act (NCTA), and the roles of the different American Presidents in furthering or hindering implementation of the Metro.
