Abstract
Central Planning Organizations, such as a Department of Transportation (DOT) or Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), use transportation modeling software to create multiple versions of future year planning networks. Typically, each version is a snapshot of the whole planning model. This includes tri-tables, their corresponding socio-economic forecasts, the highway/transit networks and future build/no-build scenarios. This paper presents one potential solution to managing different versions of a highway network with a relational database management system which links the GIS software with the planning model. The GIS software manages the projects so that incremental changes to the highway network are passed to the transportation planning package. Results of the new scenario can be displayed or mapped by the GIS.
