Abstract

Pay and display technology can significantly reduce labor and time needed to process and oversee the collection of coins, bills and credit card data generated by parking lot users. Crucial early decisions are the type of software and hardware that meets the parking system's needs, because the initial investment is so high that most operators have difficulty justifying investing in something else once they've installed a system. Machines that are well placed and easy to use will result in higher compliance rates and higher revenues with lower labor costs. They also have to be easy to use for the parking staff that service and empty them regularly. The machines also have to be designed to be easily audited, which can mean something as simple as segregating coins available for making change from those received as payment.
